Many of you who visit this site may know Robert and Leslie’s story or parts of it. Some may not know much about their journey so far so we wanted to share a little about them. We hope in learning more about their journey and their family you will see God’s love and grace.
Robert and Leslie have known each other for many years. They first met during Roberts teaching Bible at Baptist Preparatory School. They both also had kids that attended there. Robert was a widower and one day he started “whispering to God” that he wanted to know Leslie. She had no idea this was happening. She was divorced and single for many years and had been praying that in Gods time that He would bring a Godly partner. Although, she was prepared to devote her time solely to her girls and her career as a nurse if that’s what God intended. However, through several encounters over the next few months, God revealed to both Robert and Leslie what He had planned. They fell in love and committed to loving each others families as their own. God had given each exactly what they needed and wanted in each other.
They’ve been dating for over 6 years now and married for over 5 of those years (picture above of their wedding day in Santa Barbara, CA). They are still head over heels in love with each other. Like most, Robert and Leslie have faced some very rough issues in their family since marriage but are as committed as ever to each other and family. They both had great examples of marriage in their parents and pray for long lives to love each other and love others together.
Their family is an amazing eclectic group of 6 daughters, 1 son, 2 son-in-laws and 1 daughter-in-law. There’s only one daughter at home now that is in high school. They will soon be grandparents (Lolli and Pop Pop) to a grandson. They hope to share pictures, experiences and challenges that their family goes through to encourage others. As many have, they have experienced death, divorce, blended families, etc.
Robert is originally from Texas and has been doing ministry, of some capacity, since his college days at Southern Arkansas University. Which would put it at over 30 years. He loves talking about the Lord and speaking all over the U.S. He is also passionate about mentoring young men which is the first component of Upshaw Ministries, his Young Manhood curriculum.
Leslie grew up in and calls Indiana home but has raised her family in Arkansas. She is a Registered Nurse specializing in critical care. She’s been taking care of patients for over 15 years helping to treat mind, body and soul. She’s also served others most of her adult life as a volunteer for many organizations. These two huge influences in her life has given rise to R.O.A.M., RNs On A Mission, the second ministry God has inspired within Upshaw Ministries.
